Dan Dare was originally drawn by two of the greatest illustrators ever to work in British Comics. Frank Hampson his original artist, and then Frank Bellamy.
If you don't know Frank Bellamy's work, please take a couple of minutes to google him and look, you won't regret it. In my opinion, quite simply, the finest artist ever to work in the medium.
Frank Bellamy was also the reason I wanted to draw comics, but in a slightly odd way. He was born in exactly the same town I was, on exactly the same day. Oddness.
Dan Dare flew spaceships, saved planets and smoked a pipe. It just doesn't get cooler than that.
Yes!! Somebody who knows who Frank Bellamy is, and not only that, someone who loves who work! I found out about him almost two years ago after happening upon his complete works of the Robin Hood series. Needless to say, I was hooked with his art, and got me to want to do a graphic novel. I love how he draws hands and faces!
Frank Bellamy is my artistic hero, and the reason I started to draw. I was born on the same date and in the same place as him, and for my entire art-school career drew with the same nib he used. A little obsessed
I think Heros the Spartan is my favorite strip he drew, but Dare has to be close.
I wanted to do a Dan Dare piece but felt at odds that I would never pull off the vintage feel of the character; I figured you'd nail it... and you did.
I'll just pretend that my piece would have been as slick as yours...
Cheers mate - it hit all my loves really. The shading on his forehead, moving down across his face is really ripped off directly from Bellamy, that's what works on it I think.

Thanks.
Spread the word if you can please.
Spaceship Away!
P.S. Good Job on the artwork by the way
